Core subject areas

RE

During the first term, children will know and understand that there are two stories of Creation in the Book of Genesis and what it means to be made in God’s image and likeness. Children will learn about a number of miracles of Jesus and know how his actions brought change to people’s lives.  They will also learn about the following Sacraments: Baptism and the Sacrament of the Sick.

English

Linking with our topic this term, the children will begin by focusing on Legends of the British Isles. By studying a range of texts, including Beowolf, children will identify effective vocabulary which is used to describe settings, characters and atmosphere so that they can use this in their own writing. They will also learn to link ideas across paragraphs using adverbials of time, place, number and tense choice. Children will develop their use of sentence types to vary the length and style of their writing and will be encouraged to use a range of sophisticated language features such as metaphor and personification.

Mathematics

This half term will have a ‘number’ focus where the children will be consolidating their written methods of addition and subtraction and using this knowledge to solve word problems. Problem solving remains a focus throughout our numeracy work and the children will be developing their mathematical reasoning. Mental maths tests will be carried out weekly and children should continually be practising their times tables at home.

Topic

This half term our topic is ‘A Kingdom United’. The children will study locations around the British Isles in detail, learning about the counties of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales as well as key historical landmarks and tourism interests. We will be looking at the history of Britain and the invasion of the Anglo Saxons. We will explore how this period has influenced our lives today.

Science

We will be studying the properties of materials during this half term. The children’s science lessons will focus on comparing and grouping together materials according to their various properties. Later in the half term children will also test several materials’ electrical and thermal conductivity.
