Sex and Relationships Education

SEX & RELATIONSHIPS EDUCATION

Sex Education, as a specific separate subject is not generally taught within the school. However, as the children mature in the upper Junior classes, a planned programme is arranged to which parents are invited, which deals with the physical and emotional changes that will occur through puberty.

Some aspects of Sex Education occur in the course of Religious Education and other topic work. The Archdiocesan Syllabus, ‘God’s Gift of Life’ is used selectively, and teachers exercise their professional judgement in these instances, always responding in a sensitive, caring way. The Diocese has developed a new scheme for Year 5 which we follow.

While any part of the Science National Curriculum requirements in this area is compulsory, parents will always have the opportunity to withdraw their children from any other planned teaching.
