“Test everything; hold fast to what is good”
1 Thessalonians 5:21
Programming, digital creation, information and online safety
Intent
At St Mary’s, Computing helps children use technology thoughtfully, creatively and responsibly. Our Catholic belief in the dignity of every person guides how we treat others online and how we use digital tools to contribute to our community.
Children learn how digital systems work, how to create and communicate using technology, and how to solve problems. Computer science, information technology and digital literacy develop together throughout the school.
Implementation
We use selected Kapow Primary units, practical work on computers and iPads, discussion and activities away from screens. Teachers introduce concepts in manageable steps, revisit earlier learning and model precise vocabulary.
In Reception, children explore instructions, hardware and simple data through play and everyday routines. Key Stage 1 develops sequencing, simple programming and purposeful digital creation. In Key Stage 2, children build on this through networks, Scratch, data handling, digital media and an introduction to Python and AI.
Online safety is revisited throughout the year and connects with RHE and PSHE. Children learn about privacy, permission, respectful communication, wellbeing and seeking help. Modelling, visual prompts and repeated practice support access to learning.
Impact
Children demonstrate progress in computing through their growing understanding of digital systems and their ability to select suitable tools for a purpose. They use increasingly precise vocabulary to explain how technology works, create and debug programs, and test and improve their digital work. They make increasingly informed choices online, recognising risks and knowing how to seek help or report concerns.
Through discussion, practical observation and review of digital work, teachers assess how well children apply their knowledge and skills. This identifies misconceptions and informs further teaching, practice or challenge. Children develop increasing independence in using technology safely, responsibly and creatively.
