Geography

“The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it”

Psalm 24:1

Places, people, environments, maps and fieldwork

Intent

At St Mary’s, Geography helps children understand God’s world and their place within it. We want children to become curious, informed and responsible citizens who appreciate different places, people and environments.

Children develop knowledge of physical and human geography alongside the skills to ask questions, use maps and collect information. They explore how people and places are connected and how choices can affect our shared environment.

Implementation

Our subject sequence and progression grid build learning from familiar places in Reception to wider local, national and global studies. Children revisit earlier knowledge and geographical vocabulary as they encounter new places and processes.

Maps, photographs, discussion, fieldwork and local studies help children investigate geographical questions. Planned visits, visitors and relevant current events enrich learning. Children learn to collect, organise and communicate information and to consider the evidence behind an explanation.

Geography connects with Building the Kingdom and Catholic Social Teaching, including care for creation, responsibility and the dignity of different communities.

Impact

We look for children to describe and compare places accurately, explain geographical processes and use maps and fieldwork with increasing independence. Children learn to support their ideas with evidence and consider how people’s choices affect places and the people who live there.
