“Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”
John 13:34
Friendships, health, safety and responsibility
Intent
At St Mary’s, children learn that they are loved by God and that every person has dignity. Relationships and Health Education and Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education help children build caring relationships, look after their health and recognise when they need help.
Our Catholic ethos connects this learning with respect, responsibility, service and care for others.
Implementation
We use Life to the Full Plus. Reception follows Pathway 3 over one year, while Years 1 to 6 follow Pathway 2 across two-year phases. Lessons are taught fortnightly, with further teaching time when needed.
In Life to the Full, we follow a four-stage structure where content is repeated and developed across four different learning stages:
- Early Years Foundation Stage is aimed at Preschool and Reception
- Key Stage One is aimed at Years 1 and 2
- Lower Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 3 and 4
- Upper Key Stage Two is aimed at Years 5 and 6
Within each learning stage, there are three Modules which are based on the Model Catholic RSE Curriculum:
- Created and Loved by God
- Created to Love Others
- Created to Live in Community
Each Module is then broken down into Units of Work.
Stories, film, discussion, role play and everyday situations help children explore relationships, feelings, healthy choices, personal safety and life in the community. Picture News, pastoral support and links with other subjects reinforce learning.
Teachers adapt language, communication and repetition with support from the SENDCo and safeguarding team. Safe fictional scenarios, questioning and observation help staff check their understanding. Discolsures follow our school safeguarding policy.
Parents and carers are warmly invited to access the Life to the Full Parent Portal, where you can view lesson content, videos, and supporting materials:

Impact
Children demonstrate progress in RHE through their growing understanding of relationships, health, wellbeing and personal responsibility. They recognise and express feelings, explain respectful choices and understand the importance of personal boundaries. They learn to recognise unsafe situations and identify trusted adults and ways to seek help.
Through discussion, questioning and responses to age-appropriate scenarios, teachers assess how well children understand and apply their learning. This helps identify misconceptions and informs further teaching, support or challenge. Children develop increasing confidence in making informed choices, respecting others and understanding their right to feel safe.
