“Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another.”

Children’s rights, dignity, pupil voice and participation
Children’s rights and our Catholic ethos
At St Mary’s, our Catholic belief in the dignity of every person shapes how we learn and live together. We want every child to feel valued, included and listened to.
The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) sets out the rights of every child. Our Rights Respecting Schools work helps children understand their own rights and advocate for the rights of others.
Rights in everyday school life
Our class charters connect the UNCRC with respectful relationships and an inclusive school community. Children learn that everyone has rights and that our choices can help other people enjoy theirs.
Rights are explored across the curriculum and through school events. Learning about world religions connects with freedom of thought, belief and religion (Article 14). Health and wellbeing link with Article 24; play, rest, culture and the arts with Article 31; and Remembrance with protection during armed conflict (Article 38).
Pupil leadership
Our Rights Respecting Monitors of Service help children and adults keep rights visible in everyday school life. Their work includes “Wants and Needs” activities and designing lanyard tags for staff.
Pupils contribute to class charters and conversations about how everyone can enjoy their rights. We encourage children to speak up for themselves and others and to listen respectfully to different views.
