Intent

At St Mary’s, Maths helps children develop secure understanding, think logically and solve problems. We want children to become increasingly fluent and explain their mathematical ideas with confidence.

Implementation

Our Maths curriculum builds new learning on earlier understanding. Children develop secure number knowledge alongside reasoning and problem solving.

Practical resources, pictures and written symbols help children make connections. Teachers model methods and provide guided practice before children apply their learning more independently.

Daily lessons develop fluency alongside reasoning and problem solving. Children use mathematical knowledge in different contexts and explain how they have reached an answer. Our calculation policy shows the approaches used in school.

Impact

We aim for children to recall and use key knowledge, choose appropriate methods and explain their reasoning. Growing independence means recognising connections, checking whether answers are sensible and applying learning to unfamiliar problems.
